The Primary PE and Sport Premium (PPSP) for primary schools aims to improve the quality of primary PE.

For the 2026-27 academic year, a reduced amount of funding has been committed by the DfE as they move to the new PE and School Sports Partnerships model. Schools will receive approximately £8000 median average per eligible school as a one-off payment in the Autumn to be spent within the 2026/27 academic year. Guidance, conditions of grant and funding allocations will be published in the Autumn term.

We would advise schools to start planning their use of this funding ASAP.

The premium should continue to be invested in:

• Developing or adding to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that schools provide
• Building capacity and capability within schools to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

Key Indicator 1: Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
Key Indicator 2: Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
Key Indicator 3: Profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
Key Indicator 4: Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
Key Indicator 5: Increased participation in competitive sport

Funding should not be used to:

• Employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements
• Teach the minimum requirements of the national curriculum
• Fund capital expenditure
• buying services that will be delivered or used in following academic years
• buying staff PE kit
